Scope:
The history of transverse transport phenomena stemming from the spin-orbit interaction goes back to the end of 19th century, when the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnets was discovered. Since then, this area emerged into an exciting and important field especially for spintronic applications. While various mechanisms to create transverse currents in different materials and situations are still intensively investigated both experimentally and theoretically, the prominent role of the spin-orbit interaction for transverse scattering is absolutely clear. In the past decade, the diversity of the spin-orbit driven transverse transport phenomena increased drastically owing to the discovery of the spin Hall effect and topological insulators. The field reached a completely different level with respect to it importance for dissipationless spintronics and "green" technology. Currently, the field of transverse transport is at its boiling point, with more and more phenomena being brewed and discovered. New physical pictures are established and novel applications are suggested.
The purpose of this seminar is to bring together most prominent experts in the field of transverse transport, theoreticians as well as experimentalists, in order to stimulate intensive exchange of expertise, understanding and ideas in the field, accelerating thus its development. We make a particular accent on the educational side of the seminar, providing a unique opportunity for young scientists from Germany and Europe to get acquainted with the modern concepts in this area of physics, which has been so far pushed forward mainly by scientists from outside Europe.
